EFT Tapping is a particular type of tapping therapy created by Gary Craig.
Tapping therapies are many and varied but they are based on one principle - physically tapping on certain points on the body makes you feel better!
Gary Craig took everything he knew about tapping and simplified it into an approach that he named Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT for short.
EFT Tapping, therefore, is Gary Craig's unique way of applying tapping techniques for the relief of all sorts of issues - emotional, physical and spiritual.
EFT is a blend of traditional talk therapy with the ancient wisdom of acupuncture - but without the use of needles!
Several of the major acupuncture points on the body are stimulated by tapping on them with the fingertips while talk therapy, similar to counselling, takes place.
What makes EFT different from other forms of therapy?
Most other forms of treatment aim to get you to change how you think about something. EFT changes how you feel about it. This subtle change of emphasis is incredibly powerful when it comes to bringing about lasting change.
You can get a fantastic overview of EFT here on Gary Craig's web site.
Let's talk science for a minute. I promise this won't take long!
There is a specific type of scanning procedure, called a 'functional MRI' (fMRI), which is used to measure signal changes in the brain that are due to changing neural activity.
Scientists, investigating the effects of acupuncture with fMRI, have shown that there are distinct changes in brain activity when an acupuncture point is stimulated, even though both areas are unconnected by nerves, blood vessels or any other known physical connection.
Now, EFT involves stimulating (i.e. tapping on) acupuncture points, but what does this have to do with your emotional freedom?
Well, get this! It has been demonstrated, again with fMRI, that stimulating points on the skin doesn't just change brain activity. It also deactivates areas of the brain that are activated when we experience pain and fear!
When acupuncture points are stimulated, something happens at both the electromagnetic level, and the electrochemical level, that has a direct influence on how you feel. EFT practitioners make use of this fact in a big way!
You can read some more about the science behind EFT tapping on Gary Craig's web site.
During an EFT session, you will be asked to bring an issue or problem to mind. As you do so, you will tap on specific points on your body. This brings about change on the physical level which in turn influences your experience at the emotional level.
A well-qualified and highly experienced EFT practitioner will know exactly how to target your 'negative' emotions and neutralize them quickly, easily and, most importantly, safely.
